What Can We Learn From Cain and Abel

Genesis 4:1-12 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.  (2)  And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.  (3)  And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.  (4)  And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:  (5)  But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.  (6)  And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?  (7)  If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.  (8)  And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.  (9)  And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?  (10)  And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.  (11)  And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;  (12)  When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

A Lesson From Adam and Eve

Adam and Eve.  They were pure.  They were sinless.  Until Genesis 3.  What can we learn from them?  What can we apply to our own lives today?  Let’s take a look!

Genesis 3:1-24 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?  (2)  And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:  (3)  But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.  (4)  And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:  (5)  For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.  (6)  And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.  (7)  And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.  (8)  And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.  (9)  And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?  (10)  And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.  (11)  And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?  (12)  And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.  (13)  And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.  (14)  And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:  (15)  And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.  (16)  Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.  (17)  And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;  (18)  Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;  (19)  In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.  (20)  And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.  (21)  Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.  (22)  And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:  (23)  Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.  (24)  So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

  1. Don’t believe in all that you hear or read!
    1. Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
      1. The Devil is a lustful, lying murderer!
      2. John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
  • Filter ALL of what you hear and read through the final authority, the King James Bible!
  1. NEVER make a decision without the guidance and direction of the Lord Jesus Christ!
    1. Eve is a picture of the church and Adam is the picture of Christ! Eve was tempted by the devil and ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil without FIRST look to the Lord!
      1. Where do we seek the Lord?
        1. Isaiah 34:16 Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.
        2. Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
        3. Matthew 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
        4. Colossians 3:1-2 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. (2)  Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
      2. Making things right is going to cost something!
        1. When Adam and Even screwed up it cost a blood sacrifice!
          1. Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
        2. We are OWNED by God!
          1. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? (17)  If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
          2. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? (20)  For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

A Matter of Depression

Has there ever been a time in your lives where you have been discouraged, alone, sad, lost, depressed?  Has there ever been a time where you felt like a failure?  Maybe that is you today.   Maybe that has been you for days, for months, for years.  You have tried counseling, you have tried medication or maybe you are currently on medication.   Maybe you feel like an outcast because you are different.  You are not the “normal” human being like everyone else.  You feel like your life cannot go any further.  You don’t want to establish a close relationship with anyone in fear of being hurt, or betrayed, or judged.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America website there are approximately 6.8 million adults or 3.1% of the US Population that are diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder.  Approximately 6 million adults or 2.7% of the U.S. population deal with Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, 15 million or 6.8% of the U.S. population.  PTSD or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, 7.7 million or 3.5% of the U.S. population!  Major Depressive Disorder, which according to the site is the leading cause of disability in the United States for ages 15 – 44 and it affects more that 16.1 million, or 6.7% of the population of age 18 and older in a given year!

We are a depressed Nation.  Why?  Why is it that there are so many people struggling with depression and anxiety every single day?  Is it something in our blood?  Is it a problem with chemistry?  Is it something new?  Now I am not saying that there is nothing abnormally wrong with our bodies, nor am I saying to stop taking your medication.  Those of you that know me knew that I was in the military and that my job in the Air Force was a Pharmacy Technician.  In the many times that I served in the medical facility the most common form of medications that went out the window were those that treated depression and anxiety.  I filled those prescriptions daily and if not every couple of orders!   America is the land of convenience, and quick fixes, but some of those quick fixes only treat the symptoms of the source instead of curing the source itself!  We are here to worship God and find out what He has to say or we would not be here, correct?  The Bible has a lot to say about this topic of depression and what to do with it and how to overcome it!   The Bible we hold in our hands should be the absolute final authority in our lives and this church stands on the perfect, inerrant King James Bible.  Everything we need to live our lives is in this Book!  Everything , and it is relevant today as it was yesterday, and as it is and will be tomorrow, next week, next month and next year.  If we do not believe that, we have a heart issue and we need to deal with that problem FIRST before we can allow God to deal with the rest!

Here are just some of the people in the Bible that struggled with depression.

DAVID had depression because of his sin!  We all should know the story of David and his adulterous relationship with Bathsheba!

Psalms 38:4 For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

ELIJA had depression!  After great victories over BAAL and slaying all the prophets of BAAL he was running and fearing for his life from Jezebel!  He wanted to DIE!  Why? He felt worthless.  He felt, useless.

1 Kings 19:4  But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

Guess who else struggled with depression?  You will not believe it.

JESUS struggled with depression as fully man!

Isaiah 53:1-3 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?  (2)  For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.  (3)  He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Mark 14:34-36 And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.  (35)  And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.  (36)  And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

Luke 22:44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

Job struggled with depression, Jeremiah struggled with depression,   Jonah and Moses struggled with depression.  These are just a few.

So now that we have an understanding of this topic, what does the Bible say we need to do to overcome this?

  1. If you don’t know Jesus, salvation and baptism are the first steps!  If we cannot get passed the issue of salvation you will not encounter God’s grace, love and healing!
    1. Romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. (10)  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
  2. We have to TRUST He will heal us and deliver us!
    1. Faith is a big deal in Christianity. Without faith we are doomed!  It is not normal to put your faith and trust into someone you have never physically seen!  The Bible says in Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
  3. Battle on your knees!
    1. The best way to battle something when it is out of our control, is through prayer! Philippians 4:6-8 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.  (7)  And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.  (8)  Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
  4. There is strength in numbers! Don’t allow pride to rule in our hearts and become stranded on a deserted island!  We are family!
    1. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
    2. Galatians 6:1-2 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. (2)  Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Are you struggling with depression today?  Regardless of whether it is temporary or not there is a solution.  His name is Jesus Christ.  Maybe you haven’t gotten passed the first steps and you need saved and/or baptized.  Is God speaking to you today?  Don’t ignore him.  Jesus desires to be in every part of your life good or bad. He loves you.
